I love places that make you realize how tiny you

After leaving Theodore Roosevelt Nat’l Park, we headed to Glacier National Park. We were in awe when we caught our first glimpse of the park, the mountains were massive and the scenery breathtaking. It was hard to take it all in at once. How much area would we be able to cover in such a short period of time?

We were able to grab a site at St. Mary Campground and for early in the season, the campground was pretty quiet.  And directly behind our site, it appeared we have a very well traveled bear path right behind us.  And we’ve seen no less than 5 signs that we are in bear country.  And yes, we’ll be on high alert!

The first day in Glacier was stunning and it went downhill from there.  It started to rain, and didn’t stop for days. But that didn’t keep us from exploring, beauty was everywhere we looked.  We found spring flowers starting to make their appearance along with elk and deer in the meadows.  This early in the year, Going to the Sun Road was partially open and we went up as far as we could.  And the drive up was worth it, being able to see a couple of glaciers off in the distance despite the rain and cloudy conditions.

Other than when we first arrived, it had been cloudy, overcast and rainy. And for what seemed like a brief moment, there was a break in the clouds and we had wonderful blue sky and nice clouds. We thought we’d take advantage of that and hike around St. Mary Lake then drive to Two Medicine Lake.  What a difference in areas. St. Mary Lake had the great sky, by the time we got to Two Medicine, the sky was turning overcast and dreary. For that shot, I thought B&W would be perfect!

In between rain showers, we hiked a bit for the waterfalls, and imagine our surprise when we came across Calypso Balboso Orchids, otherwise known as Fairy Slippers. We typically see these in Northern MN, in a mosquito infested bog.
